TIn one of its largest coordinated enforcement efforts to date, the Department of Justice recently announced charges against more than 300 defendants in connection with alleged healthcare fraud schemes.

This year’s effort stood out not only for its scale but for the DOJ’s emphasis on using artificial intelligence and other advanced digital tools to support the investigation.

I was pleased to share my insights with Law360 Healthcare Authority for a recent piece examining the DOJ’s evolving use of AI in this space.

As I noted in the article, the results of this takedown are consistent with past years in terms of the number of individuals charged and the types of alleged fraud involved, reflecting the DOJ’s continued, robust focus on healthcare fraud enforcement.

While the DOJ has long relied on data analytics, the incorporation of artificial intelligence has the potential to make those tools more effective—allowing investigators to detect fraud earlier and uncover areas of vulnerability that might not have previously been on the agency’s radar.
